This “Youth” version deals specifically with youth mental health.
This Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, sponsored by the Eastern Missouri Chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is open for community members from all backgrounds to learn how to support an individual until appropriate mental health professional help arrives.
Upon completion of the training, trainees will receive a Certificate of Completion.
MHFA is an 8-hour training certification course which teaches participants a 5-step action plan to: assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual, the certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments.
The AFSP Eastern Missouri Chapter is sponsoring the class and there is no charge for participants.
The CPR-like program effective in improving trainees’ knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others.
Just as CPR and medical first aid is for everyone so is Mental Health First Aid. Mental health challenges – such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use – are shockingly common in the United States. In fact, more than one in five American adults will have a mental health problem in any given year. The National Council for Behavioral Health certifies individuals throughout the nation, including American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to provide Mental Health First Aid courses to prepare their communities with the knowledge and skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
