This presentation will be an overview of immigrant trauma and xenophobia and will focus on:
• What immigrant trauma is
• Factors contributing to stressful acculturation among immigrant communities
• How this trauma affects the immigrant’s ability and likelihood to seek medical and mental health care
• What xenophobia is and how it is expressed
• Approaches health care providers can take to help immigrants care for themselves and seek medical care when needed
• Tips for health care providers to create trust and open communication with immigrants to form a health care partnership; particularly when more sensitive and stigmatizing diagnosis are present such as HIV and hepatitis
