WEBINAR: Managing Syphilis in HIV Coinfected Patients: A Case-Based Approach

October 15, 2019 @ 8:00 am – 9:15 am
International Antiviral Society-USA (IAS-USA)

Assessment of Needs

The IAS–USA offers this state-of-the-art activity on the evolving challenges of managing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as part of a nationwide continuing medical education (CME) effort for physicians. The rates of syphilis continue to increase in both men and women. People living with HIV (PLWH) are particularly vulnerable to this infection and its complications. Using a case-based approach, the goal of this webinar is to provide practical information for clinicians who manage patients co-infected with syphilis and HIV, including a description of the less common clinical manifestations, challenging management questions (such as the management of uncooperative nontreponemal serological titers and the need for lumbar punctures), and future interventions that could help mitigate the rising toll of this epidemic.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of syphilis in PLWH
  • Explain the rationale for the diagnostic approach recommended for syphilis in PLWH
  • Recognize the optimal treatment approach for syphilis in PLWH
